About This Site

Smart Survival Gear is a small, independent review site about the practical gear that keeps people safe and comfortable outdoors and at home when the power goes out. We cover personal water filters, emergency weather radios, rechargeable headlamps, backpacking stoves and fire starters, and we test every piece the way it actually gets used: on real camping trips, in vehicle kits and in home emergency kits.

Outdoor and Emergency Safety

The information on this site is general guidance, not professional survival training or medical advice. Gear is only one part of being prepared. Take a first aid or wilderness first aid course, tell someone your route and return time before any trip, and check weather and fire restrictions before you go.

Personal water filters reduce bacteria and protozoa but most do not remove viruses, chemicals, heavy metals or salt. Treat water from questionable sources as the manufacturer directs, and never drink seawater. Ferro rods, fire starters and camp stoves create open flame and very hot surfaces: use them only where fires are permitted, keep them away from tents and dry grass, never run a stove inside a tent or closed vehicle because of carbon monoxide, and make sure every fire is fully out before you leave it. Store fuel canisters away from heat.

Hand-crank radios and rechargeable lights can fail or run down. Carry a backup light source, keep batteries charged, and do not rely on a single device to receive emergency alerts. In a real emergency, follow instructions from local authorities and call emergency services.
